Like most independent fostering agencies in East London, Welcome Foster Care are currently looking to recruit foster families. In particular, we are seeking people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, such as the Sikh and Muslim communities, Black and Afro Caribbean, Hindu and Christians – a truly diverse demographic.

Although some children and young people are only fostered for a few weeks, sometimes they are fostered for a long-term. That’s why it’s important to consider the young person’s identity and background when matching them with foster carers.

‘Sewa,’ or service, is an important and rewarding part of a Sikh person’s journey and purpose. Fostering is a paid career, but given the huge positive impact it can make on a child’s future outcome, it could be the biggest ‘sewa’ you ever do. More and more children are coming into care from a Sikh, Punjabi or Indian background. We want to offer these children a fostering family that matches the culture they are used to, or can identify with most. Foster carers from the Sikh community are urgently needed to fulfil this important cultural need.

It is the same with the need for Muslim foster carers. There are also more and more children of a Muslim background in need of foster care. We believe it’s really important that these children are placed with caring families that can support them in an environment that matches their cultural identity. That’s why we are reaching out to Muslim people to come forward and find out if you can foster a child.

Similarly with Black/African/Caribbean and mixed or multiple ethnic groups, Welcome have a long tradition of supporting all diverse cultures with an equally diverse group of trained and professional staff. White British families too are always in high demand to take up the fostering baton and Welcome Foster Care really do welcome with open arms all those who want to make a difference to children’s lives.

You need to have at least one spare room. You don’t need any professional qualifications, but you must be able to write and speak English to a professional level. You can be single or with a partner.

It helps to have energy, common sense and a natural desire to work with children. Experience as a foster parent will come with our help and support.

Welcome Foster Care is a small agency working across most parts of East London and so we are already extensively experienced in working with foster carers from all backgrounds, including those with Islamic beliefs and those who are from the Sikh, hindu or black community. Moreover, many of our staff are from Muslim, Sikh, Black and ethnic minority backgrounds.

With our skills, expertise and understanding of different cultures, we can form a good relationship with you, help and support you, and understand your needs. The lives of vulnerable children are at stake.

Welcome Foster Care is a well established fostering agency operating with a diverse and local staff team supporting over 50 foster carers. A significant number of our foster carers are Muslim, Black African, Asian, Black Caribbean or from another ethnic minority group, and when you become approved as a foster carer we work hard to match you with a social worker who will get to know you and support your needs, understanding your values.

The process begins with your suitability and your application. There is an assessment period that lasts between three and six months. During this time, you will learn about the financial arrangements, receive training, and allow us to learn about your home environment. Two of the big factors are the space you have available in your home and your health. After the checks have been carried out and your home determined as safe and your application has received approval, you will be registered as foster parents.

If you want to find out about becoming a foster carer, please contact the Welcome team today by filling out an enquiry form, or call us on 020 3397 3332.
